Kochikame is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Akimoto. It has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 1976, with the stories collected into 189 tankōbon volumes as of September 2016. Kochi Kame tells the everyday life of Ryo-chan. His full name is Ryuji Danma, but he goes by his middle school given name of Ryo-chan because he thinks it sounds cooler for a kid detective to have that nickname. He spends most weekday mornings chasing skirts and solving mysteries, then spends afternoons drinking coffee at Cafe Cosmo before doing more detective work in the evenings alongside Inspector Konoemon who keeps him honest. The manga was published by Shueisha from 1976 to 2007. It was serialized in the magazine "Weekly Shōnen Jump" from 1976 to 2000. In 2001, the chapters were re-serialized in "Jump Square", a spin-off magazine geared towards younger readers. In 2002, the serial was published as a collection called "Kochikame Jump" and this edition was published until 2005. The series has been collected into 189 tankōbon volumes as of September 2016. The anime television series first began airing on Fuji Television on March 2, 1980 and ended its run on January 23, 1986 with a total of five seasons and over 200 episodes aired over its five season run. The anime has been licensed for release in North America by Bandai Entertainment, and the first season was released on DVD on August 30, 2002. The second season was released on October 31, 2003. The third through fifth seasons were released on November 19, 2004, July 21, 2005 and November 18, 2006 respectively. In 2009 the series was announced as being one of 25 anime properties to be adapted as a series of novels from popular manga series by Kodansha's Kodansha Comics imprint as part of their "Kodansha Encore" line. In September 2009 it was announced that the English version would be written by Robert J. Adams. Kochikame is licensed in North America by Bandai Entertainment. Kochikame first began releasing on DVD in North America as a two-disc "Kochikame: The Complete Collection" on May 22, 2004. It was released as a five disc set on August 30, 2009. A revival of Kochikame for the sake of merchandising was planned by the anime's producer Tatsunori Masaki but was cancelled after his death in March 2013. The project, entitled , would have revolved round a new character and would have been produced by Toei Animation and to be written and directed by Hiroshi Fukutomi. It was scheduled to begin in 2015.After years of false starts following the end of the anime's original run, in 2014 Toei Animation announced that they were preparing a new anime series for release in October 2016, which would be set in the same continuity as the manga. The series was later posted on Toei's website with limited information.
